The recently announced Overwatch 2 is coming, and with it, you’ll find new characters and most importantly all-new co-op modes that test your skills against the game’s AI. There’s probably a lot more to be unveiled as we approach its release, the game is still very early in development, but Jeff Kaplan has been speaking to Kotaku at BlizzCon about some details about the upcoming game.

In addition to the reveal that the reason Overwatch’s updates have slowed to a crawl over the last couple of years is due to development time being taken up with the sequel, Kaplan also stated that the Overwatch 1 and 2 clients will eventually merge.

“There will be a point where the clients merge,” Kaplan said. “We think this is important, especially as a competitive experience. The whole idea is to avoid fragmenting the player base and giving anybody a competitive advantage. If we’re playing in the same competitive pool, you’d better not have a better framerate just because you’re on a different version of the engine.”

The plan, as given to Kotaku, seems to imply after Overwatch 2 is launched, the upgrades and improvements will also be applied to the original game. Then, at a later date, both clients will be merged together into one.

Presumably, this is all a plan to make sure that Overwatch remains competitive, both in the literal and figurative sense of the word. “We’ve all seen when the servers shut down on X, Y, or Z game. It’s always a story,” he said. “I always remember the Halo 2 players who just wouldn’t log out. They kept it up. I thought that was so awesome. I wish I was one of them.”

We have yet to see any real details about how any of this will occur, and it is important to remember that Overwatch 2 may be years away at this point. But as soon as there’s news, we’ll have the latest for you right here.
